On 2nd August 1991, Karl Chamberlain committed unthinkable crimes that no one could justify or dismiss. Through the media coverage around his arrest and court case, he found himself with a public identity.
Videos have been created and shared online about Karl and other death-row inmates, based purely on the crimes they committed. Stories are seldom told about the journeys of inmates after their incarceration, and there is rarely an opportunity for any such person to change their perceived identity, even if they have changed as a person.
This video is an invitation to share Maggie’s experience of getting to know Karl over the four years they were penpals, and his decision to become a Distant Friend of Winchester Meeting, before he was killed by homicide. It tells the deeply moving story of Maggie travelling to Texas to be with Karl at the end of his life, in a true act of friendship, clearly demonstrating the Quaker call to walk cheerfully over this world meeting that of God in everyone.
